Dirac’s Dream—the Search for the Magnetic Monopole

چکیده

I first quickly summarize the history of the Magnetic Monopole leading to the quantum theory of magnetic charge that started with a 1931 paper by Paul Dirac who showed that the existence of magnetic monopoles was consistent with Maxwell's equations only if electric charges are quantized. Next I will briefly review the status of monopole searches. Last, but not least I discuss in more detail the MoEDALexperiment the latest accelerator experiment designed to search for direct production of magnetic monopoles or dyons (particles with electric and magnetic charge) and other highly ionizing particles – such as heavy (pseudo-) stable particles with conventional electric charge at the LHC. The MoEDAL experiment employs nuclear track-etch detectors deployed in the VELO vertex region of the LHCb experiment.

Monopole Fields from Vortex Sheets Reconciling Abelian and Center Dominance

We describe a new order parameter for the confinement-deconfinement transition in lattice SU(2) Yang-Mills theory. It is expressed in terms of magnetic monopole field correlators represented as sums over sheets of center vortices. Our construction establishes a link between “abelian” and “center dominance”. It avoids an inconsistency in the treatment of small scales present in earlier definitio...

Interactions of a Massive Slow Magnetic Monopole with Matter

Introduction A concept of a magnetic monopole has been introduced into modern physics in 1931 by Paul Dirac [1]. He postulated existence of an isolated magnetic charge g. Using general principles of quantum mechanics, he has related the electric and magnetic charge values: ge = n 2 h̄c, where e is the electron electric charge, h̄ is the Plank constant, c is the speed of light, n = ±1, 2... is an ...

A Regular Theory of Magnetic Monopoles and Its Implications

A regular charge-monopole theory is derived from simple and self-evident postulates. It is shown that this theory provides explanations for effects of strong and nuclear interactions. The theory is compared with Dirac’s monopole theory. Applications to strong and nuclear interactions are compared with quantum chromodynamics. The results favor the regular charge-monopole theory and indicate diff...

Magnetic Monopole in the Loop Representation

We quantize, within the Loop Representation formalism, the electromagnetic field in the presence of a static magnetic pole. It is found that loop-dependent physical wave functionals acquire a topological dependence on the surfaces bounded by the loop. This fact generalizes what occurs in ordinary quantum mechanics in multiply connected spaces. When Dirac’s quantization condition is satisfied, t...

Three-cocycles, Nonassociative Gauge Transformations and Dirac’s Monopole

In 1931 Dirac [1] introduced a magnetic monopole into the quantum mechanics and found a quantization relation between an electric charge e and magnetic charge q, 2μ = n, n ∈ Z, where μ = eq, and ~ = c = 1. One of the widely accepted proofs of the Dirac selection rule is based on group representation theory (see, for example, [2, 3, 4, 5, 6]). In the presence of the magnetic monopole the operato...
